Owasco Gilwell Club
1st Troop of Gilwell
Lord Baden-Powell organised and ran the first training course for Scouters at Gilwell Park in 1919 and at the end of the course, to celebrate the fellowship of Scouting, he invested the Scouters as members of the 1st Gilwell Park Troop by presenting them with two each from a set of Zulu beads he had recieved as a gift when he was in Africa. The tradition has continued ever since. Today, Scouters who complete their Section Wood Badge Training are given the "Gilwell" Scarf as well as a leather thong containing two wooden beads. These are the mark of an individual who has invested time to complete training in their program section.
The GILWELL REUNION is held annually for and by Wood Badge scouters.
In Ontario, this annual reunion takes place at Blue Springs Scout Reserve and all Gilwellians are invited to attend. Blue Springs Scout Reserve is located just west of the town of Acton. The first reunion of Gilwellians was held at Blue Springs in 1952 in the Ebor Park section of the reserve. The Gilwell weekend has grown annually in attendance and now has from 2,000 to 3,000 participants.
The mission of the Owasco Gilwell Club is to be of service to scouting and the community in Owasco. Please contact Terry Fielder for how you can become involved and for further information on Gilwell activities.
